Occupational Therapist - Sheri Barnes, OTR/L, M.Ac.
is Occupational Therapy?
therapy (OT) is a health and rehabilitation profession that helps
people improve, regain, develop, and build skills that are important
for independent living. The overall goal of OT is to increase a
persons ability to perform daily tasks and activities as independently
as possible with the greatest amount of self-satisfaction.
therapy practitioners work with people of all ages who, because
of illness, injuries, including work related injury, have developmental
or psychological impairment and need specialized assistance in learning
skills to enable them to lead independent, productive lives, and
to gain their highest functional level.
occupational therapy can prevent injury, or worsening of existing
condition or disabilities, and promotes independent functioning
in individuals who may otherwise require institutional or other
long-term care, OT helps keep health care costs down and maximizes
the quality of life for the individual, their family, and other
therapists (OTs) work in many different settings and with persons
of all ages. For example they may work in public and/or private
schools with children who are learning disabled, physically challenged,
and/or developmentally delayed. Medical settings (e.g. hospitals,
rehabilitation clinics, wellness clinics, and nursing homes) are
traditional sites for OTs to work usually with clients who have
had their lives interrupted by acute and chronic illnesses and conditions
(e.g. head injuries, strokes, depression, arthritis, injury, etc.).
addition to treating patients directly, Occupational therapists
are often called on to evaluate clients, plan appropriate treatment
and supervise someone else who works directly with the client.
