History of Acupuncture

Acupuncture originated in ancient China over five thousand years ago. As a healing art, acupuncture has been used all over the world for centuries and is the primary source of health care for approximately one third of the world's population. Acupuncture is becoming widely accepted in the United States and has been endorsed by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

Acupuncture works by balancing Qi (pronounced "chee")-your vital energy or life force. According to Chinese medicine, universal laws of nature govern the human body as well as the world around us. Qi flows through your body in much the same way streams, rivers and oceans flow on earth. When Qi is flowing smoothly there is wellness, balance and harmony. When Qi is not flowing smoothly, there may be symptoms of pain and disease.

The Benefits of Five Element Acupuncture

Traditional Acupuncture, also known as five-element acupuncture, functions on all the levels of the body, mind and spirit. Acupuncture effectively treats a variety of health concerns, including headaches, allergies, insomnia, back pain, menstrual difficulties, injuries, digestive disorders, addictions and stress.

Many people who have experienced the benefits of acupuncture report that they:

- Are sick less often and recover more quickly.
- Have increased vitality and stamina.
- Have become active partners in their health care.
- Have richer, more harmonious relationships.

What You Will Experience As a Patient

A holistic approach is used in each treatment, taking into account each individual's body, mind and spirit. Respect, compassion and confidentiality for patients is at the core of all that we do.

You will receive the care and concern of a carefully trained, licensed professional, ready to listen and ready to help.

About the Needles

First know that acupuncture is an art and science that encompasses so much more than just sticking needles in people. The practitioner uses all of the senses, to see, to hear, to feel and to ask, to offer help and guide your healing. Warmth is often used to nourish Qi, and this is done with the burning of an herb called Moxa. Touch and palpation are also very valuable tools in treating acupuncture patients.

It is important to know that acupuncture needles are extremely thin, about the thickness of two human hairs. The needles are sterile, individually packaged and disposed of after each use. During treatment most needles are inserted just beneath the skin and although sensations vary from person to person, most patients report little to no discomfort.

Your First Visit

You and Sheri will spend one to one and a half hours together during your initial visit. During this time your reasons for receiving acupuncture and what benefits you wish to attain will be discussed. Your health history will be reviewed and a physical exam will be conducted. Needles or moxa may or may not be used during this initial visit.

The Relationship Between Acupuncture
and Other Medical Care

Acupuncture is complementary to Western medicine, meaning they are designed to work together. People who are under a physician's care should continue with the established plan of care. You should continue to take medication that has been prescribed by your physician.

You Don't Need To Be Ill

The sense of well-being and the benefits of a fully enjoyed life are available to everyone. You don't need to be sick or in discomfort to realize true health. All it takes is a willingness to work together with Sheri to help you become the best you possible.
